VOTE FOR HILARY on 8th June - for Education, Business and Health

Hilary was born in Bristol, educated in Port-of-Spain, Surrey and Reading, and married in Kent. She raised her family over a 26 year period in West Yorkshire. She has two children, four step children and two young grand-daughters.

In 2014, Hilary made the big decision to leave Yorkshire for the West Midlands to be closer to the most important people in her life. She now lives in Worcester with her elderly mother and sees her partner at the weekends. "It's a rather unconventional arrangement," Hilary admits, "but it's just how things have turned out, and it works for us!".

Hilary has had a fairly unconventional working life too which has spanned teaching English in Cairo, running a bookshop in Wales, travelling round Britain and Ireland as a UK tour guide, and helping to support disabled people into work. She also set up and led a small mental health charity in Rochdale before her move south. Hilary is now the Services Manager of a local charity in Worcester which provides advocacy support for vulnerable and disadvantaged people.

Hilary started her political life in Yorkshire, where as a borough and town councillor she got involved in the Upper Calder Valley Renaissance initiative, and helped bring residents together to regenerate their town centres and communities. She was also Chair of Governors at a local high school. In 2010 she fought a very successful parliamentary campaign for the Calder Valley seat, securing over 13,000 votes for the Liberal Democrats.

Following her move south, Hilary stood for Redditch in the general election of 2015 and also campaigned enthusiastically to Remain in the Referendum of June 2016. "I am a passionate democrat, and so I was philosophical about the disappointing outcome. But I am determined to help ensure that the Brexit negotiations are constructive, not destructive.", Hilary remarked.

Politically, Hilary's other passions are fighting inequality and protecting the environment. She believes that strength and stability result from equality and diversity, and is outraged that several of the poorest regions in the whole of the EU are to be found across the UK, while London remains the richest. "How can that be acceptable? No wonder so many people used the referendum to voice their discontent!" One of her big concerns, meanwhile, is that Brexit will take up so much government time that the pressing issue of climate change will get forgotten.

Hilary is respected for her compassion and her integrity, and for being a staunch defender of those facing discrimination and disadvantage. Hilary is also know as someone who believes that what most people really need in life are opportunities, not handouts. She is a free thinker and not afraid to go against the crowd.

As an MP, Hilary Myers would stand up for the residents and businesses of South Staffordshire with courage and determination. Hilary is determined to ensure a stronger economy and a fairer society for South Staffordshire, building an open, tolerant and united Britain.

As a Liberal Democrat in South Staffordshire, Hilary Myers is campaiging for;

- Supporting our small and medium sized businesses and the impacts of hard Brexit (forecasts from South Staffs council show a possible impact of up to 8,600 jobs),

- Providing the best affordable and accessible health and distributed social care,

- Investing over £37m in education in Staffordshire,

- Working for improved local transport, road infrastructure and better commuter services.

    The Liberal Democrats will ensure that we maintain access to the single market (worth £222 billion in 2015). Forecasts show that South Staffordshire could lose up to 8,600 jobs as a result of leaving the EU. 98% of businesses in the area are either small or medium sized.

    "The Conservatives have no plans for leaving the EU let alone protecting small and medium sized businesses, many of whom have just been hit by business rates hikes of over 30%. They are the bedrock of our community and local economy," said Hilary Myers, Liberal Democrat candidate for South Staffordshire.

    Strong and stable my arse!

    As polling day approaches, the 'strong and stable' government promised by Theresa May seems to be in tatters. It is no longer possible to be sure what she stands for. It is clear that ill-thought-out policies will progressively reduce the Tory lead, but not to the point where she can use the 'fear factor' of Corbyn as Prime Minister to convince voters that they must vote Conservative to save the country from this threat.
